Perhaps it was the sound of their spat that caught Marian's attention as she peeked out from the kitchen, half
curious and half concerned.
Selena, feeling the sting of her own anger, found herself unexpectedly calm. She didn't want to dredge up
painful memories here, especially with the risk of her grandmother overhearing and getting upset. When she
looked up, her gaze was icy, her lips curling into a cold smile. "If that's what you want to think, there's nothing |
can do!"
Everett's stare could've cut glass, his words forced through gritted teeth. "Selena, are you admitting it?"
Selena was at a loss. How could someone so smart be so difficult to talk to?
Unable to hold back, she snapped, "Can you stop picking fights? Since we got married, you haven't chere
witheven once. Who's really at fault for Grandma's misunderstanding?" The message was clear: You reap
what you sow!
Everett's face darkened. "Selena, you've publicly made a fool of me, and you still think you're in the right?"
Selena felt not a shred of guilt and shot back, "Look who's talking."
He was no stranger to accusations himself. What right did he have to point fingers, especially when his
accusations were true and hers were just a mix-up? She hadn't even voiced all her grievances yet, and here he
was, all talk!
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtEverett could feel his blood pressure rising, like a weight on his chest, making it hard to breathe. Was this really
the woman who'd clung to him for three years? When she loved him, she'd do anything to keep him close. Now,
with a new interest, she was ready to toss him aside.
What did she think marriage was? Did she think he, Everett, was a servant to summon and dismiss at her whim?
Just then, Grace's voice cut through, announcing that dinner was ready. Selena quickly shifted her mood, her
voice softening, "Alright, coming."
Everett watched, stunned, as she
switched her demeanor in an
instant. The argument seemed
irrelevant to her, as if his feelings didn't matter at all.
What a heartless woman!
"Let's go eat," Selena said, reaching out to him.
No matter how they clashed in private, in front of others, they had to play the part of a loving couple.
But he shook her hand away, his face stormy. "You can still eat?"
"Why not? I've been missing hcooking for ages." She couldn't help but swallow at the thought.
"Fine, very fine," Everett muttered, his tongue pressing against his molars, giving her a fierce look before walking
off.
Selena rolled her eyes. 'Eat if you want. If not, suit yourself." She wasn't about to cater to him!
When Selena reached the dining room, she was greeted by a table brimming with her favorite dishes. Eagerly,
she sat down, not bothering with utensils, and picked up a piece of chicken with her hands.
It was incredibly delicious. "This is it, so good!" she exclaimed.
Grace playfully tapped her nose. "You little glutton, still so hasty even after getting married. Aren't you worried
about people laughing at you?"
People from high society had all sorts of rules. Grace studied Everett earlier, noticing his every move screamed
