Chapter 57 Chapter 57: Benjamin told Bryan where Jonathan's ward was and then said, “Jonathan's relationship with you is bad. He will only make things difficult for Eileen." Bryan fixed Benjamin with a probing stare, asking, "Are you close with her?" Benjamin hesitated, cleared his throat, and finally added, “We used to be college classmates. I owe her a favor. That's all." Bryan lifted his eyebrows slightly, and a shadow crossed his eyes. “You are quite reliable." Benjamin sensed an unusual shift in the conversation.
Though he couldn't quite identify what was happening, he said, "Mr. Dawson, I will leave now." "Okay," Bryan responded. After Benjamin departed, Bryan stared at the VIP ward, his gaze fixed on a brightly lit window.
He understood that the real threat to Eileen was not Jonathan, but Kian.
Pulling out his phone, he noticed several news alerts and messages from company executives.
Yet, there was no message from Eileen. Was she preparing to confront Jonathan directly? Early the next morning, after only a few hours of sleep, Eileen appeared worn. She walked downstairs and heard snoise outside her door. She opened the door and saw Bailee.
Bailee was sitting with breakfast in hand. Upon hearing the door open, she quickly stood up and approached Eileen.
"Eileen, I made breakfast for you," Bailee said.
Feel the thrill on galnovsBailee's cautious and remorseful expression reminded Eileen of her past self.
Eileen moved aside, letting Bailee enter. "You didn't need to make breakfast and bring it over. I could just have something simple on the way." Bailee unpacked the breakfast and set the dishes on the table. “Just eating something simple isn't nutritious. Anyway, I'm not working right now, and I don't mind waking up early." Bailee was clearly trying to atone for her past mistakes, which Eileen noticed immediately.
Eileen said, "Just this once. If you're free this morning, go look for a job. With your educational background, it shouldn't be difficult. Don't worry too much about the salary. The most important thing is to find something you enjoy." Eileen couldn't fault Bailee for working for the Warren Group despite knowing her history with Vivian before; after all, Bailee had wanted to work there for the money.
In the stark simplicity of the kitchen, Bailee's casual attire and somber demeanor made her appear quite pitiful. After a moment, she lifted her gaze to meet Eileen's and nodded firmly. "Eileen, I won't cause you any more trouble. I will look for a job!" Eileen handed her sfood. "Eat up. After you finish, I'll send you back." Bailee accepted the food and said, "I'll take the bus myself. No need for you to drivehome." They finished their meal and parted ways. It was the weekend, traditionally a tfor relaxation.
However, Eileen faced an accumulation of work because Bryan had been staying at the hospital to accompany Vivian. She had to go to work today.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtThe company was unusually quiet today, yet she found it hard to settle her thoughts. She made a cup of coffee in the pantry and walked back to her desk, pausing outside Bryan's office.
Her eyes lingered on Vivian's desk, where she had worked. Vivian's little decorations still adorned the space.
The door to Bryan's office felt cold and uninviting, yet it had been motivation for Eileen for years.
The coffee in her hands grew cold as she stood there; she didn't drink it. After clarifying her thoughts, she returned to her office with a newfound resolve.
It seemed she had finally decided what to do. With a clear mind, her work efficiency soared.
Benjamin placed a report on Kian's desk. "Mr. Warren, this is the quarterly report." Kian, reclining in his chair, looked up. "Where is Bailee?" he asked.
"She didn't cto the company today," Benjamin replied, briefly scanning the resignation letters on the desk. "Today is the seventh day. I think she won't cback." "Find out where she is and what she is doing," Kian instructed casually.
Benjamin nodded. "Understood." He left the office and quickly tracked down Bailee's whereabouts. Within an hour, he was back at Kian's office. "Mr. Warren, Bailee went to look for a job today. She graduated from a prestigious university, and two companies have already scheduled interviews with her," Benjamin reported.
Given Bailee's credentials, securing a new job should be easy. She could probably find a job within three days. However, Kian wasn't going to let Bailee do that soon.
"Pass on the message to those companies that Bailee's contract dispute with the Warren Group has not been settled," he instructed.
Benjamin had expected this tactic from Kian, but the reality of executing such orders still made him uneasy. He frowned, the image of Eileen involuntarily flashing in his mind.
He lingered a moment, then turned and left. After stepping out of Kian's office, he made the necessary calls, relaying the message to the companies.
Once back in his office, Benjamin found himself in a mental tug-of-war over whether to inform Eileen of the situation.
He had already talked with Bryan for Eileen the night before, which, in his view, settled the favor he owed her. After sdeliberation, he turned off his phone, picked up his documents, and focused on his tasks, choosing to keep the information to himself.
Meanwhile, Bailee, buoyed by the prospect of potential jobs, began shopping for ingredients to cook a meal for Eileen.
But her optimism was short-lived. Calls began to cin from the companies with which she had scheduled interviews, each informing her that the positions were now filled and that her interviews were canceled. The calls cone after another, and within minutes, all her opportunities had evaporated. She realized Kian was behind all this.
Though her instinct was to confront Kian, she knew any aggressive action on her part would only complicate matters for Eileen.
She lingered in front of the shelves in the supermarket for over ten minutes, tears gradually streaming down her face. She had envisioned supporting Eileen after graduation, but now, she had inadvertently caused more problems.
"Bailee!" Huey called out, recognizing Bailee from behind. His approach was marked by a warm smile, which quickly vanished when he noticed her tears. "Why are you crying? Did someone hurt you?" Seeing Huey, Bailee's tears flowed more freely.
"It's not about someone hurting; it's that Eileen is being targeted. I can't seem to help, and I just keep making things worse. What should I do..." Her sobs drew the attention of several people nearby.
Huey quickly offered an apologetic smile to them and guided Bailee out of the supermarket.
He paid for the items Bailee had picked, got in the car with her, and comforted her for over half an hour before she stopped crying.
Bailee said, "I saw the comments you left on Eileen's social media. You two are not together, right?” With a sheepish scratch of his head, Huey admitted, "My family's been pressuringa lot. I had to ask her to pretend we were in a relationship." That explained their actions for Bailee. She knew all too well how Ruby could be. Eileen must have agreed to Huey's request because of Ruby.
"Who's targeting Eileen? Is it her boss, Bryan?" Huey inquired with caution. “Did he do something to her?" Bailee gazed back at him, her eyes welling up again. She sniffled and asked, "Do you know something?" A long silence filled the car as they exchanged looks.
Eventually, Huey broke the silence. “I'm going to be straightforward with you. During the company teambuilding trip at my family's resort, I saw Bryan enter Eileen's room. He stayed there for several hours." He paused, unsure if he should continue.
Bailee's face fell. "It seems you're already aware. Yes, Eileen and Bryan have a complex relationship, but it's more complicated than you might think." She chose not to mention Eileen's marriage to Huey.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmHuey mistakenly thought Bailee was hinting at workplace harassment, which worsened his impression of Bryan, but he chose not to pursue the topic further.
"Then what kind of trouble is Eileen facing?" he asked, concern evident in his voice.
Bailee could tell Huey genuinely cared about Eileen. She resolved to keep Eileen's marriage a secret, holding onto a sliver of hope for Huey and Eileen to be together in the future. "This is actually aboutstruggling with my job..." she began.
She detailed her challenges without bringing up the disputes involving the Warren family and Eileen. She simply shared her difficulties in enough support for Ruby's treatment.
Huey pondered suggesting his family's resort for job opportunities but realized that Baylee'squalifications were too significant for her to settle as an ordinary worker in the resort. "Don't worry. I'll help you look for jobs,” he assured Bailee. “I don't think that the Warren family can control everything..." As the evening settled and her workday ended, Eileen let her car race down the road. Neon lights flickered, casting a glow that illuminated her troubled expression.
She paused at a traffic light, staring at the sixty-second countdown on the red signal, using the moment to organize her thoughts.
Now, she faced two daunting choices: leaving the Apex Group or opposing the formidable Warren family. Leaving the Apex Group meant severing all ties with Bryan, ending her relationship with him entirely. However, opposing the Warren family would not only disrupt her own life with instability and challenges but would also drag Bailee into turmoil.
For a fleeting moment, she wished she were alone; without ties, there would be nothing to fear. Yet, the thought of jeopardizing Bailee's future held her back from standing against the Warren family. The only way for her to break away from Bryan involved disclosing a secret. It was her identity as his wife. The prospect of his reaction daunted her. She might even need her resignation letter. Confronted with their marriage certificate, Bryan might simply tell her to leave.
A sharp pain clutched at her heart, making it difficult for her to breathe.
The traffic light switched to green. She pressed the accelerator and turned left, heading straight to the hospital.
Soon, Eileen's car glided into the underground parking lot. After turning off the engine, she took long breath. She gathered the resignation letter and the marriage certificate from the passenger seat before stepping out of the car. Standing by the elevator, her mind felt eerily blank. She feared that hesitation might overwhelm her resolve.
As the elevator numbers climbed, her breathing involuntarily stopped until the elevator doors opened.
