Chapter 106

Chapter 106

Due to heavy traffic, Hailey didn’t arrive at the restaurant until half past five. What was worse, a sudden

downpour had left her completely drenched.

Seeing it was raining outside, Raphael was standing at the entrance. Spotting her figure on the street, he quickly

approached. The rain was completely unexpected, so he didn’t take an umbrella. He had no choice but to drape

his jacket over his head to shield her as she made her way from the car.

Parking was not allowed before the entrance, so Hailey had expected to brave the rain alone, but the moment

she stepped out of the car, to her surprise, she was pulled into an embrace.

Raphael pulled her close, sheltering them both under his jacket. “Ready? Let's run,” he said, holding the

makeshift cover overhead. Hailey hesitated, but refusing would seem overly cautious. Nodding, she let him guide

her through the rain, and rushed to the entrance of the restaurant together with him.

Once inside, Raphael glanced at her damp hair and sighed. “What bad weather. We should've picked another

day.”

The winter storm was unusually harsh this year and made the air even much more freezing than ever. Hailey’s

cheeks were flushed from the cold. She sneezed, prompting Raphael to drape his jacket over her shoulders. “The

heater is on. It's warm inside. Let's go in,” he said, steering her forward.

The second they walked into the restaurant, they bumped into Owen and Alice. Actually, they were here purely

for business today, but the situation looked extremely awkward, especially with Hailey in another man’s arms.

Unaware of their breakup, Alice barely contained her excitement as she saw Hailey walking intimately with

another man. “Miss Dalton,” she feigned surprise, “you’re all drenched. What's going on? By the way, who is this

gentleman?”

She was overjoyed inside that before she could do anything, Hailey had already made a fool of herself right

before Owen.

Hailey ignored her, locking eyes with Owen instead. His expression remained indifferent, so she turned back to

Alice with a polite smile. “Miss Gibbs, are you here for business?”

Alice nodded and smiled. “Yes.”

“Don’t let us interrupt. Though with this weather, do be careful.” Hailey then led Raphael away without another

word.

The entire encounter passed without a single exchange between Hailey and Owen. Alice nearly trembled with

glee but pressed for confirmation. “Owen, what's wrong? Why are you so cold to Miss Dalton? Aren't you two

dating?”

Owen stood rigid, his voice icy. “Nothing.”

Alice frowned. “But aren’t you two dating? Why are you acting so weird? Did you quarrel? No way. It can’t be like

this. Lettell you, Hailey is too young. You should be more patient and generous. After all, you are a mature

man, and you're supposed to take care of her feelings.”

Owen said coldly, “We're not dating anymore.”

Alice deliberately made a shocked expression. “What? Not dating anymore? You mean you broke up?”

Owen strode toward the exit without another word and Richard handed him a black umbrella, which he accepted

with a terse nod.

Alice stood frozen for several seconds, her eyes alight with triumph. She had been right all along that Hailey and

Owen were bound to fall apart eventually.

After all, how could a naive student possibly be attractive to a man like Owen? Clearly, he had just been toying

with her, like a gourmet sampling plain oatmeal after a lifetof decadent feasts. But no man accustomed to

luxury would ever settle for something so bland.

Quickening her steps, Alice caught up to Owen, her mind racing with excitement.

Back inside the restaurant, Raphael studied Hailey’s expression. “Are you alright?” he asked softly.

Hailey hadn’t walked away immediately before. She had stayed there for long enough to hear Owen's answer.

She lowered her gaze to mask her emotions. “Don’t worry. I'm fine, she murmured. “Let’s go upstairs?

Sensing her reluctance to elaborate, Raphael didn’t press further.

They were led to the second floor by the waiter. The blast of warm air from the heaters chased away the chill,

but her hair remained damp. Raphael flagged down a server for a towel. “Lethelp you dry it?

“Thank you, but | can do it myself,” she replied, her tone polite but distant.

With an understanding smile, not to force her, he handed her the towel and watched as she stepped aside to pat

her hair dry. Her coat had taken the worst of the rain, so she handed it to a server to dry. Beneath it, her black

turtleneck accentuated the graceful curve of her neck.

Raphael frowned suddenly and put his hand on her forehead. “You're having a fever,” he said, his voice firm. “We

have to skip dinner and get you to the hospital as soon as possible.”

Hailey blinked, quite surprised. Touching her own forehead, she felt no different than usual. “Really? | don’t feel

sick at all.”

“I'm a doctor. I'm professional, so truston this. His tone was serious.

“But we're already here, and I'm starving,” she countered. “Also, it’s heavily raining outside. At least wait until it

stops. So let's just cat first.”

Raphael glanced at the storm still raging beyond the windows and made a compromise. He had meant to offer

her his jacket, but it had also been wet as they ran in the rain. Thankfully, the restaurant's heater was warm

enough, and Hailey’s coat soon becdry and warm.

By the tthey finished their meal, the rain had tapered to a drizzle, then stopped altogether. The post-storm

sky was unusually clear for winter, streaked with a vivid sunset.

“It's finally bright out,” Raphael remarked.

Hailey nodded. “Yeah, it's about spring soon.”

He chuckled. “No wonder it rained. Seems like it always does before the spring comes.”

Staring at the horizon far away, Hailey murmured something under her breath. “It didn’t even last for a year.”

“What?” He was confused.

She forced a smile. “Never mind. We should go back now.” But as she stood, all of a sudden, the room tilted.

Darkness swallowed her vision, her legs went weak, and her knees buckled.

“Ha”
