Chapter 64 Chris sat in his car for a long tafter hanging up on Kevin, his mind a tangled mess.
That stuhad been running since last year, right under his nose, yet it had grown into something beyond his control.
Stephanie was his hancée, and yet, with just a few words, she had shattered everything.
Chris couldn't help but wonder who exactly was the man backing her At noon, Ella finally got to have lunch with Stephanie. “What happened to your mouth? Why is it so swollen?" Ella asked as soson as she saw her.
"Corbitten by a bug, Stephanie replied.
She was already tired of people asking about it all day.
Ella frowned. "What kind of bug bites like that?" Stephanie froze for a second, unable to answer.
Then, noticing the man standing not too far away, Ella chuckled awkwardly. "Your brother sure spoils you, huh?" She cout for hunch. Just to make sure she didn't eat anything spicy, he even had someone follow her the entire tto keep an eye on her.
Stephanie scoffed. "You don't think that's just him being controlling?" "If that's what control looks like, signup for a dozen of him. I love it," Ella said.
Stephanie rolled her eyes. "Hey, are you serious? Since when do you actually want someone telling you what to do?" Most people rebelled against their families for a bit of freedom.
She had a few close friends in Fiorenza who constantly fought against their parents' strict rules just to gain sindependence.
"You wouldn't get it." Ella said. Tve always had to take care of myself. What I'm missing is someone who actually cares." Stephanie paused, her fingers tightening slightly around her fork.
Her gaze softened as she looked at Ella.
Unlike Stephanie, Ella had a rough start in life.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtStephanie had been abandoned by a servant, but at least the Giovanni family took her in and never let her suffer.
Ella, on the other hand, had a deadbeat father who disappeared the moment she was born, a textbook case of an irresponsible man.
She was from a single-parent family.
Her mother, busy trying to make ends meet, had left her in the care of an aunt, only sending money every month.
Later, her mother becone of the most powerful figures in Long Harbor, but throughout Ella's entire childhood, love and affection had always been absent.
1/4 Chapter 64 Even now, she didn't live with her mother.
"If you actually had that many people hovering over you, you'd see how suffocating it is Stephanie said, trying to comfort her.
Ella scoffed. "You just don't appreciate what you have." She wanted a caring older brother, lots of them, in fact.
"But at least I don't have to worry about you anymore," Ella added. "I was really afraid the Hart family would make you suffer a lot.
Stephanie smiled but didn't respond to the mention of the Hart family. Just thinking about their idiocy left her speechless.
"How's Mrs. Turner doing lately?" Ella asked.
"She's doing just fine. Stephanie replied.
Ella never really knew how to describe her relationship with her mother. They were distant, yet her mother gave her an absurd amount of pocket money every month. She was never stingy, but she never gave Ella her time.
"She's always busy making more money. She already has so much, yet she still works like crazy. Honestly, with the way she grinds, I can't help but think that who is she competing against," Ella said.
"Oh' Competing against someone?" Stephanie raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah. It's like she has to surpass someone and crush them under her feet, Ella said.
Otherwise, Ella couldn't understand her mother's insane drive.
But every tmoney was brought up, Ella could hear a certain bitterness in her mother's voice.
"Has Mrs. Turner ever tried to find your father?" Stephanie asked.
"I don't know. She never tellsanything about that," Ella said, shaking her head.
She had no feelings toward her father, probably because she had never known him. Whether he existed or not made no difference.
"Alright, let's stop talking about depressing stuff. Let's talk about Chris and the Hart family instead" Ella said. "That's depressing too, Stephanie muttered.
Every tshe and Ella talked about family, the conversation always took a turn for the worse.
Ella popped a mushroom into her mouth; it had no flavor, completely bland.
For someone who enjoyed spicy food, this was borderline unbearable.
Just a heads-up. Tyler is a snake, and Chris is going to be an absolute idiot when it comes to Olivia. They're definitely going to make trouble for your studio," Ella warned.
Stephanie wasn't too worried about direct attacks; her powerful brother had her back. But sneaky tricks from people like them were much harder to guard against.
Apart from whispering in Chris' ear to turn him against her, Olivia had plenty of other underhanded tricks up her sleeve.
Stephanie understood exactly what Ella meant and smiled. "Don't worry. Whether they catopenly or in the dark, I'm ready for them." 2/4 22:06 Mon, 3 Mar Chapter 64 48 If they dared to make a move, she would counter every trick they threw her way. And in the end, the ones suffering losses would be Chris and his people.
Ella, hearing her confidence, was reassured.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmChris and the others were desperate now, which meant they'd resort to all kinds of reckless tactics. But Stephanie wasn't like them; she was waiting, prepared.
The moment they tried anything, they'd only be stepping into their own downfall "That's good." Ella nodded, then added, "If you need anything from me, feel free to tell me. I'm not afraid of them." The Ashford family was the most powerful in Long Harbor and not an easy enemy to make. But Ella had been spoiled by her mother for years; she feared nothing and no one.
Her mother rarely spent twith her, but whenever someone cto complain about Ella's actions, she Le would defend her without hesitation. "She already did it, so what do you expectto do?" It was something her mother often said.
She never controlled Ella much when things were fine, but the moment someone caused trouble for her, she would step up and fight back. It was a very typical kind of mother. Stephanie chuckled. "Got it." Lunch ended. As the two were about to leave, a driver who had been waiting nearby stepped forward. "Miss Giovanni, Mr. Giovanni is waiting for you outside." Ella raised an eyebrow at Stephanie and teased. "He really spoils you, huh? Does he even monitor how much you eat?" Stephanie's mind instantly flashed back to the past few dinners. Whenever Sebastian was away, he would still call her during meals, always reminding her not to overeat.
Most families worried about their kids not eating enough, but Sebastian worried about her eating too much.
Ella saw Stephanie's silence and twitched the corner of her mouth. "Wait he actually does?" Stephanie nodded. "Yes." Ella's eyes filled with envy. "I want a brother like that too. A hundred of them wouldn't be too many."
Stephanie froze for a second. A hundred? That many? She suddenly imagined herself in a first-grade classroom, surrounded by a hundred kids all bombarding her with questions at the stime. Just the thought of it gave her a headache.
Stephanie got into the car.
The familiar, noble scent of Sebastian surrounded her, making her cautious as she looked up at him. "You call the way here just to wait for me?" Sebastian simply asked, "Did you eat?" "I did, she nodded.
"Then let's go back," said he. As soon as the words left his mouth, he pulled her onto his lap.
Stephanie's entire body went rigid. Now that she was older, being lifted and carried by Sebastian like this made her feel incredibly awkward.
3/4 22:07 Mon, 3 Mar Chapter 61 And after what happened last night, she was even more tense than usual.
His rough fingertips traced over her lips as he murmured, "Why is your mouth getting more swollen? That bug must've been really aggressive..
Stephanie's mind buzzed blankly. For sreason, the way Sebastian said that felt strangely suggestive.
